My target is to cut my media consumption in half. First thing tomorrow bye bye myspace, half of every email newsletter received and cut all podcast subscriptions in half. Atari 2600 game art inspired Venture Bros DVD set

The third season of the Venture Brothers on DVD is set to be released on March 24/09 and the cover is a spoof of an old Atari 2600 game case. Very, very nice. I've never seen the show but have heard great things.

The Venture Bros. (alternatively The Venture Brothers) is an American animated television series airing as part of Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.

New ipod shuffle model coming

New ipod shuffle design with 4G of memory and a unique voice over option that will tell you the name of the song at the push of a button. Nice improvement but I really rely on the display in the nano and have upgraded fully to the touch model. There's no going back at this point.

What kid didn't have that awesome wind up motorcycle? I can remember warm summer days whipping this sucker down the driveway towards a plywood ramp and having it wipe out most of the time before it flew. But one jump made up for 10 misses. Barenaked no more

Steven Page (far left in below photo) and Barenaked Ladies are no more. They plan to soldier on without him. I personally think their best years are long behind them but they still put out a consistent product - I wish them all the best. They seem to be putting a positive spin on things but Steven's recent drug troubles must have had some effect on things (he was charged with drug possession in July last year after police found cocaine in an apartment in NY).

By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies. Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart will continue recording and touring together as Barenaked Ladies. Steven Page will pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunities while the band enters the studio in April 2009, and hits the road in the fall.

Page says "These guys are my brothers. We've grown up together over the past twenty years. I love them and wish them all the best in the future."

The band also wish Steven well in all of his endeavors. Ed Robertson says: "It's the start of a new chapter for all of us. Here's to the future!"

Everyone is looking forward to making new music and thanks their fans for their support.

This free app is absolutely fantastic - you MUST download it. Did I say it's FREE?!?! The application is called Stanza. The best part is that you can download literally thousands of free classics from Feedbooks seemlessly through the app. My first downloads included a couple of classics (Edgar Rice Burroughs) plus a contemporary title that the author has allowed - "Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow.

I picked up an iPod touch 16 G version for what I thought was too much money shortly after Christmas. It was a bit of a treat - an upgrade from my 4 G nano that was a couple of years old. Well - I tell you - this thing is like crack. With the wifi and the apps this has replaced my laptop and ds in one fell swoop. The only thing I could hope for would be for longer battery life. For those that haven't tried - you honestly don't know what you're missing. I can honestly say this is essential technology that you must have - call me an Apple zombie with pride!

I've become more sensitive of my media consumption lately. This might have something to do with the sheer amount that I seem to be streaming into my life. Whether its newspapers, magazines, books, music, tv, dvds, movies, video games, audio podcasts, video podcasts, rss streams, twitter, facebook, or blogs, there seems to be a never ending demand for my attention. And the urgency of all these voices makes you feel the need to keep up lest you miss something "important". But what's lost in all this noise is that fact that none of it, really, is important. What's important is your own personal life and the connections you've got with actual people - whether that be your friends or family. All these other distractions are really just that, distractions. Time to trim down and focus.

Very nice spoof that will hit you right in the nostalgia soft spot. I remember my Intellivision and those classic Plimpton spots. I also remember secretly coveting the 2600 because their games always seemed just a bit cooler and they had that rocking joystick controller. I did love my Intellivision but it was always a bit square.

Here's a classic commercial ... the GTA spoof got Plimpton pretty spot on ... although they might have sold more had they used that line about Atari sucking balls.

That sick feeling in my stomach about the new GI Joe movie coming out actually took a leap after I saw the Superbowl trailer. And not in a good way. It was a brief flash but after some investigation my worst fears have been confirmed. They've given him LIPS!

I know, I know, its Transformers all over again (remember the outrage over Prime's robot lips?) but Snakes Eyes ain't supposed to be able to talk - MUTE. What is the point? Things are definitely adding up to a big pile of poop my friends. Check it out...

Kid Robot

Kid Robot is a specialty toy company that caters to people that like to customize from a blank slate (see their Munny blank below as an example) or are looking for something just outside the mainstream. They also try to create figures with a definite artistic sensibility and have attempted to inject an urban edge into their products.

Their website is definitely worth a browse at kidrobot.com

One unique aspect of some of their products is the concept of a blind box. You only find out which specific figure you have in a given line when you've opened it up. The packaging won't give any indication of it's contents.

This is definitely not your parent's GI Joe or My Little Pony.

In Toronto, the Circa nightclub has a room devoted room to them and their unique take on the world.

You can find their products at their online store at kidrobot.com, specialty comic book stores or youth retailers such as Urban Oufitters.

Nintendo DS games at The Source

This may already be old news but anyone in the market for some deals on video games may want to pop by their local Source stores across Canada. These stores, fka Radio Shack (now saddled with the troubled Circuit City sub-name), have a wide in-store only clearance sale on a number of titles across several platforms including the DS, Wii, Xbox 360 and playstation. The biggest deals were on the Nintendo DS titles.

I was able to pick up 3 games today at the Danforth store in Toronto;

Assassin's Creed Altair's Chronicles for $9.96
Megaman Advent ZX for $9.96
Eco Creatures Save the Forest $4.96

I know these are hardly hot "A" list games but you can't beat the price. I'm going to stash them away for a rainy day or maybe resell them on eBay later.

I did have to laugh when the guy asked if I wanted an extended warranty on the $10 game for just $3! WTF?

Halo comes to the Lego set

Yes its true, Mega Bloks has obtained the Halo license from Microsoft and will soon be rolling out toys based on the mature rated series. The pitch is that this is targeted to the tween market but anyone who has kids will know that anything like Lego skews a bit younger - by 10 they start to lose interest. So ... is it responsible for a company to produce a child's toy based on an adult targeted source? Investors seem convinced as their stock picked up quite a bit on the news.

There are mature toys targeted towards adult collectors but this seems different to me - a cynic might ask if someone will go after the GTA license next - can you imagine Hot Wheel playsets from that gritty game? YIKES!

I recall that the late EGM magazine once had an April 1st spoof of a Lego Halo video game similar to the popular Lego Star Wars franchise. Eerily prescient.

The Temper Trap

The Temper Trap is a four piece hailing from Melbourne, Australia. I first got wind of them just a week or two ago when I saw the trailer for the upcoming film "500 Days of Summer". The song hooked me in and they're now on my must buy list. They've only got a ep on itunes so far including the tracks "Sweet Disposition" and "Science of Fear" - both are definitely worth a spin.

In terms of describing their sound I've heard it compared to early U2 or "atmospheric" but I think that only goes so far and limits them. Their songs have a driving percussion and soaring guitars that build to a satisfying climax. The vocals are incredibly strong and sweet with an wide range from a faint almost falsetto to - well I wouldn't say a roar - but they do carry the songs to a satisfying emotional height.

Two extremes of upcoming comic book movies

Here’s an example of 2 movies coming up that are directed at a mass market that are obviously going in completely opposite directions.

I had seen some GI Joe images earlier but these today completely blow - to the point where I’m now not interested at all.

Watchmen, on the other hand, continues to impress me with each nugget that’s released. I was never the biggest fan of the graphic novel but I am now totally in. I saw a Japanese trailer that had some scenes with an aging Nixon and some background details on the world and was very pleased. This is definitely on my must watch list.
